What Umbarger Show Feeds are All About!
It is very important that the value of STEAM FLAKING is understood. The process of steam flaking the grains is what sets Umbarger Show Feeds apart from most other feeds. This is not a new process - it has been around since the early 1800's. This steam flaking process causes gelatinization of the complex starch molecule rendering it more digestible. As an example, steam flaked corn becomes 95% digestible while raw shelled corn has only an 80% rate of digestibility.
Several trials attest to the benefits of steam flaked grains. Dr. R. A. Zinn's trials at the University of California reveal that steam flaking improves the utilization of corn by as much as 16%. In Iowa State University trials, undigested kernel passage was 14% for artificially dried corn, 12% for high moisture corn, and 2% for steam flaked corn. Other university tests have shown from 9% to 12% faster gains and 10% to 14% increased feed efficiency with cattle fed steam flaked grains.
