FEEDING PAYLEAN® TO SHOW PIGS:
WHAT IS PAYLEAN?
Paylean is a trademark name for the feed additive ractopamine. Paylean® is a feed ingredient that increases the amount of quality meat in high-value cuts, improves production efficiency and decreases backfat. Paylean® directs nutrients away from fat deposition and toward lean deposition. Paylean® increases muscle protein synthesis, muscle protein accretion, and muscle fiber diameter. It adds about 15% to the pig’s genetic potential to produce muscle. Thus, higher dietary protein levels are needed to meet the increased capacity to produce muscle.
Paylean® is approved for use in swine weighing 150 to 240 pounds. Daily gain and feed/gain improved 10-15% with the addition of Paylean® while backfat was reduced and loin-eye area was increased.
APPROXIMATE FEEDING GUIDELINES/OPTIONS
1. Feed 9 g/ton Paylean with 1.2% lysine diet for 14 days prior to show
a. Pigs will gain 2.5 to 3.3 lbs/day (35-46 lbs. total) during this 14 day period
b. Pigs will develop more shape and muscle definition through the ham and loin
c. Will reduce backfat up to 0.1 inches
d. May encounter more problems than normal with heat stress
2. Feed 9 g/ton Paylean with 1.2% lysine for 40-60 days
a. Pigs will have the big jump in gain for the first 21 days, then taper off to minimal gains by the end of 50 days to help maintain weight
b. Pigs will exhibit maximum effects on muscle shape and definition
c. Backfat may be reduced by up to 0.2 inches
d. 2-4% increase in percent lean
e. Movement may become more restricted because of increased muscle mass
f. Some pigs will become more hyper, nervous or irritable
g. More susceptible to heat stress
Paylean is a safe way for producers to improve the carcass characteristics of their show pigs. Additional management may be necessary to adjust rations and appropriately handle show pigs fed Paylean.
The decision to feed Paylean® to show pigs should not be taken lightly. How much additional muscle the pig needs to be ideal for the show ring must be considered. Good structural soundness of pigs fed Paylean® is critical to avoid problems due to faster growth, lower feed intake and greater muscle mass. Paylean® should be fed only to those pigs that are structurally correct as it will intensify any structural inequalities. Positive stress gene pigs have a very low tolerance for Paylean®. If Paylean® is taken out of the diet, growth performance is altered and fat deposition occurs rapidly. For best results, Paylean® should not be fed longer than 4-5 weeks.
Paylean should only be fed according to label instructions. Statements of performance are not guarantees as genetics, management and environment determine results. Paylean® is not labeled for use in combination with any other drugs or antibiotics. Paylean® does not require withdrawal prior to slaughter.
Higher levels of Paylean® and longer feeding periods WILL NOT improve the animal. Extended use of Paylean® may cause the cracking of hooves. Paylean® is not approved for breeding swine.
